Aston Villa vs Chelsea Prediction (23-05-2021)
Chelsea have to win to secure Champions League football, but Aston Villa will be looking to ruin that here with a good result.
The home side have truly struggled in the second half of the season, especially after losing captain Jack Grealish for a long period of time through injury. The player has been a huge miss, but they’ve done what they can without his influence and although it’s a massive improvement on last season, they’ll be disappointed that they’ve slipped out of the top half of the league after such a successful first half of the season.
There was talk early on about Villa finishing in a European position and they looked as though they could go on and at least challenge for it, but it wasn’t to be. The form staggered and the team didn’t really recover once they dropped down the table. With only 7 wins in the league since the start of 2021, it’s not been good enough for this side who can play some exciting attacking football.
John McGinn has enjoyed a good season with the club and he’s been a highlight of the season, while striker Ollie Watkins has impressed in his first season with Villa. The team can be proud of their season overall as they continue to build a squad of talented players, and with a great 2-1 win last time out against Tottenham, they should come into this with confidence and a good result here could ruin Chelsea’s Champions League hopes for next season.
Chelsea’s win against Leicester City gave them real hope of Champions League football as they moved into 3rd, but they are still only a point above Liverpool and Leicester City.
They have to pick up a good result here to guarantee that top 4 place for next season, but it’s in their own hands now. They outclassed Leicester on the day who had beaten them just last week to pick up the FA Cup, but the team performed when it mattered in the league. While it’s not over yet, it’s looking good for Chelsea, but there will be Aston Villa fans in attendance for this one and that could spur the home team on to look for a positive result.
With Manchester City to come in the Champions League final for Chelsea, they’ll have to keep playing well and keep winning games and that is possible with a squad that has looked extremely confident for most of the time that Thomas Tuchel has been in charge. It’s up to Chelsea to perform against an Aston Villa side that looks much stronger when they have their captain Jack Grealish in the side, and it could be made even more difficult with the added pressure of Liverpool and Leicester ready to move above should Chelsea pick up a bad result here.
Chelsea’s disappointment at losing the FA Cup final for a second year running will still be a hurt for the team, but they bounced back well midweek and a similar performance would give the side 3 points here.
They’ll look to control the game here with a lot of pace going forward and the strength they have at the back should see them limit Aston Villa to few chances along with N’Golo Kante who has been fantastic this season, as the midfielder will likely have the task of man marking Jack Grealish. It’ll be a tough game, but one that Chelsea will be confident they can win.
