Everton vs Liverpool Prediction (16-03-2020)
The biggest relief for Everton coming into the latest Merseyside derby is that their bitter rivals now cannot secure their first league title in 30 years on their visit to Goodison Park. It’s hard to imagine a worse scenario for an Everton fan but the postponement of the game between Manchester City and Arsenal means that is no longer a possibility this weekend.
Everton had been enjoying a mini revival under Carlo Ancelotti but a few bubbles would have been burst last weekend thanks to a 4-0 humbling at the hands of Ancelotti’s former employers Chelsea. The Toffees were clearly off colour on Sunday which coincided with a day where Chelsea were the exact opposite.
If there is ever a game you’d want to be on the horizon after a heavy defeat, it’d normally be a local derby where form traditionally goes out of the window. Unless, that is, your local rivals are the runaway league leaders who are only two wins away from securing the title.
Recent history in the fixture also isn’t happy reading for Everton fans, with the last blue derby day coming on the 17th of October 2010 when Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill scored in a 2-0 win at Goodison Park.
Despite an incredible season so far, the red side of the city will be subdued at the moment after crashing out of two cup competitions within the last two weeks. Nothing will stop Liverpool on their way to the Premier League title but there will, no doubt, be a lingering disappointment that that is all there is left to play for.
They’ll be determined to show their neighbours who is boss and to go within one win of glory with a win on Monday night and will be confident of doing so.
In terms of a result, Liverpool will be hot favourites but it takes a brave man to bet on a derby. And with out of form Adrian almost certainly in between the sticks for the reds, both teams to score looks like a wise punt.
