Tuchel’s Chelsea has it easy with Porto

Champions League Cup

FC Porto 0, Chelsea 2 – Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Selvilla

Having come out of an embarrassing 2-5 home defeat at the hands of minions West Bromwich in a Premier League clash last weekend, Thomas Tuchels’s Chelsea found their bearings to stride past a dogged Porto side 2-0 at the neutral venue of Sevilla in Spain.

With both legs scheduled to be played at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Selvilla owing to Covid-19 outbreaks in Portugal and England, the one on Wednesday night happened to be Porto’s home game. Even without their key suspended forwards Sergio Oliveira and Medhi Taremi, Porto were able to create chances with Luis Diaz and Mateus Uribe going close early on.

But it was the English side who opened the scoring of the night when Mason Mount ran down the right flank and finished past Porto keeper Augustin Marchesin to the far post in the 32nd minute. Porto desperately sought an equalizer in the second half and had 12 attempts on goal but nothing to show.

The Blues had the last laugh as Ben Chilwell rounded Marchesin inside the box and slotted in to put the game beyond their opponents’ reach. Of all the sides in the final eight now, Chelsea look the most likely to make the Champions League semi-final stage.
